Every country has a beginning. Some were established so long ago that the exact dates have been lost, and they just seem to have always been, but the United States is young enough that it still remembers its birthday... July 4th, 1776. So happy Birthday USA! Religion is no different than countries, or peoples, in that regard, and the Christian faith is the same. We argue about the exact date of Christ’s birth, because the exact day has been lost and relegated to conjecture, and antiquity. Is it December?... September?... well, the discussion continues. What is important though is our own beginning and personal history with Jesus Christ. Is it important that we record the exact day we asked Him to be our Savior?

Do we read God’s Word, and how do we do so? There are many ways in which we go about reading the Bible; we hunt and peck for truth in specific scriptures , we read certain chapters repetitively, we lean on favorite bible stories, we look for signs of Jesus in the Old Testament, or seek Him out in the New Testament, however we read it is good, but it is meant to do more than just teach us, or entertain us.

Do you believe in the Word of God, and hold it up as the one truth by which you can orient your life, and find your way into eternity with God? This is our key to sanctification and to all the promises for which we long. In the Word of God we find our way towards becoming one with Jesus Christ, and God Himself... do you approach your reading of the Bible, God’s Holy Word, with this understanding?

Is studying the Bible and theology something that you do so that you can mine the truth from it? Do you read in order to gain an understanding of God’s embedded secrets? Are you seeking the title of “Bible Scholar?” If this is you let me encourage you to continue your studies, but remember to approach them in childlike fashion. Bring the heart and wonder of a child to the effort. Because God reveals his hidden wisdom from all but the children of faith... the childlike.

Reading and remembering the Word of God is very important, but unless we actually do those things we have read then we have gathered nothing but useless knowledge. To be enamored by the words contained in the Bible without putting them to good use by doing God’s will in them is sheer foolishness. Do you live the life you read? Do you not only hear God’s voice, but obey it?
