All in Eternity

Do you want to be a disciple of Jesus Christ? Do you want to spend eternity in heaven with God our Father? Well, discipleship and eternity with God come at an extremely high price, and there is no amount of bargaining that can reduce the cost. The price includes great hardship, suffering, and sacrifices, and will strain us beyond our natural ability. Yet, the real question isn’t whether we have the full fare, and determination, but whether we are willing to pay this price at all, because it takes everything we have.

Is Jesus the Christ to you? Are you so convinced of this fact that there is no other option for you except to follow Him, or face death? Does Jesus represent the singular truth and the one real way to joy, eternity, and an eternal relationship with God? Does He bring you some promised future life, or do you find a joyous life In Him now? So I say all of this to ask you one question... if Jesus is the Messiah, and He has promised you abundant, and eternal life, doesn’t that abundance, and eternity, begin for you the moment your faith in Him is sealed?

How sweetly, and with what love does our Lord beckon us to come to Him. Do you hear Him, and yet ignore His invitation? Does the call and allure of the world drown out His loving words, and appear more enticing to us? Friend, there is no earthly love or passion that can equal those of God. His love is forever, and His passion for our lives is full to the brim with goodness and mercy... He never disappoints.

When we sit with a saint in their final hours of life and we witness the struggle as their body clings to life, we are inclined to wonder why they are being allowed to suffer in this way. Then, as they take their final breath, and the raspy rattle of death in their breathing grows silent, yielding to peace at last, we thank God for His mercy. Death comes in many forms yet whether in a slow release of breath, or in a sudden heart attack, there is pain, but then comes the peace, joy, and rest from the struggle. This is our homecoming with Christ; this is the transition from simply picking up our cross, to actually being placed upon it, and that which awaits us beyond.

When we suffer it is natural to want that pain to be gone. Some, in the midst of their travail, will ask the Lord to remove that burden from them, and even question His motive, or goodness. They say “Why would a God of mercy and love do such a thing to us? Why would Jesus tell us to take up our cross?”, and their experience with suffering and death shakes their faith. Yet we are meant to suffer alongside Jesus, and the cross we bear leaves a crimson stain across our backs... His. This is our mark of faith, and promise of eternal glory.

Every country has a beginning. Some were established so long ago that the exact dates have been lost, and they just seem to have always been, but the United States is young enough that it still remembers its birthday... July 4th, 1776. So happy Birthday USA! Religion is no different than countries, or peoples, in that regard, and the Christian faith is the same. We argue about the exact date of Christ’s birth, because the precise day has been lost to conjecture, and antiquity. Is it December?... September?... the discussion continues. What is important though is our own beginning and personal history with Jesus Christ.

Have you ever been to heaven? Perhaps you don’t feel that you have walked it’s streets, but have you ever stood on an adjoining hill and looked out over it, and heard the sounds of life there? Right now you are probably thinking that I have lost my mind, but more than likely you have been closer than you think, and in some moments of realized faith, actually stood there. The problem with most of us is that we don’t look around, hear the singing, smell the fragrance, and understand where we are.

Is your life so disjointed, and your spiritual journey so up and down that you often are brought to doubt that God is at work in you at all? If this is you then you need to lean on the Word and listen as scripture reassures you that God is absolutely desiring to be the focal point of your life, and to give you His joy, and overwhelming rest, peace, and comfort in Himself.

Are your eyes fixed on the things of heaven, or do you still chase after those of this world? Do you long for kingdom treasure, or the gold, silver, and riches of an earthly existence? It is so tempting for us to set our priorities incorrectly. If we see ourselves as a physical being that contains an imbedded spirit, rather than a spirit wrapped in an earthly body then we are lost. How do you envision yourself, and how do you live your life?

We are creatures of both natural and spiritual construction. It is God’s desire that our natural selves be disciplined, and come under the authority of the spiritual, but that wild and unschooled nature is not a passive student in this transition. Have you gained control over your natural self? are you waiting for God to make this choice for you? Well He has His desire, but the choice remains yours.
