All in Love
What does our Bible look like? Is it a simple black book with words, or ornate with pictures and such? How too is the cross on which we envision Jesus; is it a simple wooden cross, or ornately designed and built; perhaps even cast in gold? How about our faith? Is it simply in the word of God, or have we massaged it, and improved upon it with additions meant to make it easier on us? In short, have we made God our own, rather than simply being His?
By believing in God, and having knowledge of Him, God gives us life and godliness, but what do we do with them? Do we practice our faith to it’s fullest, or do we attempt to wear it around our neck like a trophy; something we take pride in having achieved? Scripture tells us that we should be more than just the recipients of God’s grace, but to partake of it, and escape the corruption of the world.
Loving God, and loving one another go hand in hand, both of these originate in God, and neither can exist in us without His love having first been given to us. Do you have trouble expressing love? Do you consider yourself a tough and worldly person? Perhaps you have confessed your faith with your mind, but your heart and soul are yet to experience Him.
If you have proclaimed your love for God, and Jesus Christ, then don’t make peace with evil, and don’t come to terms with sin. There is no room in your life for a peaceful coexistence with the very thing that desires to destroy you.
How sweetly, and with what love does our Lord beckon us to come to Him. Do you hear Him, and yet ignore His invitation? Does the call and allure of the world drown out His loving words, and appear more enticing to us? Friend, there is no earthly love or passion that can equal those of God. His love is forever, and His passion for our lives is full to the brim with goodness and mercy... He never disappoints.
Do you complain about where your faith is leading you, and the hardships and punishments that you must endure along the way? Some of us feel that when we accept the LORD as our one true God, and Jesus as our Savior and Redeemer, that we have reached the pinnacle of life, and that everything should be fragrant and painless from that moment on, but in fact we have just entered into a journey of faith in which we will be challenged, and made to suffer as we grow in faith. So do not grumble at the lessons we are receiving, they are evidence of God’s love.
Do you remember the moment when you made your commitment to God, and to follow Jesus Christ? How long ago was that, and have you done so since then? Perhaps you have never made that pledge... maybe you just started worshiping Him without a promise, or you have recently decided that this is something you should do. Establishing an agreement with Jesus is important because it commits us to Him, and a relationship... just as the wedding covenant commits us to marriage... this promise too is a Covenant we establish.
Do you live in dread, and the fear of evil or bad things that can suddenly happen, or are you calm and at peace within yourself? What rules your life; is it a constant waiting on the next terrible thing to befall you, or the rest and peace of God who shields you? Anxiety and stress are today’s buzzwords, but they needn’t be. Fear, and even startling fear, are not what God wants you to feel, or to anticipate in your life.
A married man says he loves his wife, and I hope that is true, but how do we gauge whether we are honestly loving her as we should? The only true measure is to compare our love for her against the love of Jesus for His bride... the Church. Comparing ourselves against other men is to make a flawed comparison; only when we go to scripture and use Jesus as our model are we able to truthfully understand the love we should have.
Do you like to try new foods, visit new places, meet new people? Well be careful, because such desires for newness and diversity can lead you astray when applied to your faith. Our love for Jesus shouldn’t require us to meet Him like a stranger every day, and we should resist the temptation to change Him in some way each time we visit Him, or redecorate His House every time we enter His door.
When you pray do you refer to God as your Father? When you call Him by this name is it an official title, or a loving one? Sometimes we get confused about who a father is intended to be, and think to give him our respect without remembering to love him. We treat him as the head of the household, but lose sight of how much we love him and he loves us. Do we treat God the Father as a King, or do we love Him with all our heart?
Are you feeling trapped in a life of sin, or perhaps you find yourself in the throws of great temptation, and don’t know how you can save yourself? Well if this is the case, look to the Lord God because it is His intention to redeem you from your sin, and to save you from all temptation.
When did you begin to pray? Can you remember, or was it so long ago that it has been lost in the mist of your memory? Did you begin praying at the moment you confessed God as your creator, Jesus as your savior, or even before you understood who they were and you cried out in the darkness of your night for help... not knowing exactly who would come, but knowing someone greater than yourself would respond? Prayer, it begins with a cry, and ends in a conversation of love and eternity.
Do you exercise your faith in fullness, or is God required to constantly remind you of its importance? Do you place what you do for Him ahead of who He is in you? If so then perhaps your holiness and power have followed suit. Are you wanting to reinvigorate the miracle working faith that we see in the apostles, then stoke the fire of your faith.
Do you exercise the same Holy Spirit that filled Jesus? Have you acknowledged this truth that comes when He enters you at conversion, or do you read of the miracles and amazing things that were done by the apostles and wish you could accomplish such things? Now is the time to claim the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and then to go about the business of the Father’s will. It all starts in love...
