Joyous praise, is it absent in your life and church? As I read my morning devotional today I realized the even in the nineteenth and early twentieth century lifetime of E.M. Bounds there was a lack of praise in many churches. He wrote of the praise and incense that infused the early churches and how vital this was to projecting the gospel and winning souls. Bounds was right, God is worthy of our joy and praise, and yet God is complex in His nature, and churches should espouse the serious study of His Word, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the width and breadth of their nature, through serious worship. We should not abandon one for the sake of the other.

Today my devotional reading spoke of singing as a form of praise and prayer. The scripture reference for this devotional reading was Psalm 50:23 but I have added a couple of additional verses to it for additional clarity. Singing is a challenge for me because I have a hard time carrying a tune, or as an old saying goes… “He couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket.” I love music, I can hear it in my mind, and hum it, but the words just can’t seem to make it from my lips with the same intense beauty. However, I keep trying and hope that I am not torturing those around me when I do.

In my devotional reading this morning Pastor E.M. Bounds wrote of the early churches that had no heat in their buildings to keep them warm in the winters during services. He said "that the flame in the pew and the fire in the pulpit must be sufficient to keep them warm." Of course, Bounds is talking about the spirit of The Lord, and our burning desire for Him. Then to further make his point he used verse 2 from Psalm 141, and added verse 8 as well.

The world is five sunrises away from Christmas morning, and the day when we will celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Thank God Almighty we aren’t still awaiting His birth, but celebrating that which has already come! As with the birthdays of my own children, we like to reminisce, and think about that day Jesus was born; it brings the same tears of joy to our eyes. Now He is with us always, every minute, day, and week... so join me in praising Him... listen to our week with Him...

When we enter into our prayer closets do we do so with praise on our lips, or have we prepared a long list of needs and troubles that we can’t wait to lay tearfully before the throne? Are we glad to be coming before our Father, and are we excited to be able to talk to Him about our problems, or are our eyes filling more and more with tears as we take each step closer to our audience with Him? Although there are countless sorrows and troubles lifted up to the Lord in prayer each day, isn’t it remarkable that Heaven is filled with praise and worship… not wailing, tears of sorrow, or the sound of mourning. So, how should we begin our prayers? How should we enter into the presence of God?

Are we afraid to tell others what God has done for us? Do we fear that they might think we are singing our own praises because He has done so many wonderful and amazing things in our lives? Well we couldn’t be more wrong than to remain silent because the Lord deserves our open praise, and worship before all people, and nothing lifts Him higher than to speak of all He has done for us.
