Listening for the Voice of God

02/27/2026

Do we speak WITH God in prayer or simply TO Him? Does His voice come to us and direct us, or do we approach Him with a list of wants and demands then follow them quickly with “Amen” and without pausing to listen to what He has to say? If God isn’t speaking to us then perhaps we need to first believe that He will, and that He desires to. Not believing that God wants to have a conversation with us is an indication that we don’t really know Him as we should. Speaking to Him in prayer but not listening to His response is not a conversation, no, it is a lecture or a monologue and is this how we pray today? If it is then we are demonstrating that we don’t value what He has to say.

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Jeremiah 33:3 KJV

God speaks to us in many ways; sometimes it can be a loud voice, like the one He used to speak to Moses when He said…

“God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3:14 ESV

at other times it is a small still voice like the one He used to speak to Elijah:

“And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.”

1 Kings 19:12.

or perhaps it is in an inaudible voice that He speaks to our hearts:

“the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar canal, and the hand of the Lord was upon him there.”

Ezekiel 1:3 ESV

or maybe through our dreams and visions at night:

“In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds,”

Job 33:15 ESV

or through visions during our waking hours:

“After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”

Genesis 15:1 ESV

Quite often God speaks to us by reveling Himself through His Holy Spirit. But however it is that He might choose to speak, regardless of the manner, He most certainly speaks. The question is… are we listening? Pastor Andrew Murray wrote of our listening for God’s voice in this way:

“As we enter the place of secret prayer, let us be eager to hear Him speak as we are to say what is on our heart. The highest blessing of prayer will come as we cease to pray and let God speak.” - Andrew Murray

God is not merely a wisp of vapor, or a cloud floating high above the world, He is as real as the flames licking up out of a burning Bush, the sound of David’s lyre, the raindrops on Noah’s face, and the voice which spoke to Moses from atop the Mercy Seat.

“And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.”

Numbers 7:89 KJV

Moses had many conversations with God, and so did/does every prophet. We don’t just speak to God, but He speaks to us as well. What we have to say is important to us, but what He has to say in return is much more so. We have the question to every one of God’s answers. We wish to take a journey, but only God knows our true destination. None of this can happen unless we hear His voice.

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”

Isaiah 30:21 KJV

So, are we listening? Are we ready to obey His voice?

Prayer:

Father, I thank you for speaking with me and building our relationship through conversation. Thank you for guiding my steps, by saying turn left, or right. I wish to make a pilgrimage to your eternal kingdom Lord, but I can only get there if you lead me and instruct me by calling out to me. Speak to me always Lord, and may my ears be attuned to your voice. Let me see your signs as the deaf see the words in the hands before them, and let my ears hear you in the world about me as a bat through the night, or the prophet’s heart hears the beat of yours. Holy Father still me in our secret places and speak to me of your will. Tell me those things you would have me know Lord and let your Holy Word be a lamp unto my feet… and your voice reveal your presence within me. Merciful Father, you hear my desperate cries, my words, and the utterances of my spirit, but give me pause Father, so that I can hear your replies as they return to me. Make your thoughts known to me regarding my needs and desires. Let your small voice, your thunderous clap, your soft sighs, your sweet dreams and ominous visions speak to me, and as you speak let my attention be focused upon you. I tremble at the sound of your voice, for the anticipation of it is great. Speak to me Father and I, your child, will hear and obey. Holy, Holy, Holy, are you my God who hears and answers my prayers and tells me that you love me.

“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”

1 John 5:14-15 ESV

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”

Jeremiah 33:3 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. “

John 3:16-17 ESV

Amen! Amen! Amen!
