This morning in our time of devotion let’s remind ourselves that prayer is not just a method of asking God for earthly things, and relief from worldly problems, but much more. Prayer is the beautiful avenue along which we travel to seek spiritual comfort and enlightenment as we ask our Father for divine blessings and desires. Prayer not only rescues us, and provides for us, but it also refreshes us in every way… none more importantly than the peace and refreshment of our souls as they are made new by it.

The human mind is a wonderful thing, and when there is constant noise or conversation going on about us it can block those things so completely that it is as if they did not exist, but despite our amazing ability to focus, it is still not perfect. So, there is no substitute for experiencing real peace, and quiet… especially when we want to enter into the spiritual realm, and be alone with God. Do we have that time, and place, set aside where we can separate ourselves and hear only the voice of God, and experience His breathing as His life moves into, and out of, our bodies? Solitude is not realized by being separated from everything, no, it is not being completely alone, but being alone with God… He is the life in us. Do we have a place where we are being born, and reborn in Him?

How and where do we begin our day? Do we begin each one in obedience to the Lord’s call? Do our mornings start in a quiet place with a time of thanksgiving, and seeking the Him through His Word? Are we in the habit of preparing ourselves for another righteous walk, and glorious conversation with Jesus in the day that lies ahead? Moses was called in the morning to come to the mountaintop where he would stand before God, and receive His Commandments… where do we stand as dawn breaks over us in our lives? What do we expect to receive as the new day begins?

Do our prayers begin to rise up before our feet hit the floor each morning? Do we thank the Lord for this new day, and ask Him to lead us in it before we stand erect to face the world? It is one thing to seek God in prayer when we will confront something difficult in the coming day, or are being pursued by an enemy, and are desperate for help, but what about the desperation of our soul? That deep longing that yearns for the presence of the Lord? Do we long for Jesus to awaken in us, and God to lift us up as we breathe the first breaths of each new dawn? Is our faith rekindled and the fire of our soul’s desire for our relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, bursting into flame to light our way… even before we reach our prayer chair or closet? Ask yourself… at what point in my day does my soul desire to enter into the presence of God?

How do we begin and end each day? Do we open our eyes with praise and thanksgiving on our lips? Do we do this in the hard to times as well as the good? Relationships are built from constant attention, but they are made strong in times of hardship, sorrow, and suffering. In times like this we see what is true about our love as we lean on a friend, or share in a disappointment. Praising God is not meant to be a “Happy Time Only” event, and requires discipline as we come to Him EVERY day, and in ALL things.

How should we begin our days as Christians? There are so many verses in the Bible that give us instruction regarding our faith as dawn approaches, and as we look towards the life of Jesus we find that He rose early each morning to pray, and was resurrected in the predawn darkness as well. So how should we meet OUR new day? Well, we should use the example set by our savior, and the songs of Psalms whose lyrics, and melody, are the sounds of early morning worship.
