It is the 26th of December... The day after Christmas. For those of us who are parents we know that the day following the birth of a baby is a day of rest and recovery for mother and child. Birth is a wonder, but it is also traumatic. During the time of Jesus when all women gave birth naturally (without pain killers) it would have undoubtedly been even more so. So it is that on this day we take a deep breath and relax with our loved ones. Some of us will be healing after being on our feet too long yesterday. And a few will be spending their day repairing damaged relationships from "honest?" words, or otherwise rejuvenating their tired selves. Much like the day following the birth of our own children, there will be a sense of peace and calm about this day.

One Christmas Eve morning, a weather front moved into Nashville in the wee hours before dawn. As is my custom, I was already awake and praying when the rain began to fall by the buckets full. Then, while listening to the wind and the sound of the rain beating on the awning over our deck, I was overcome by my thoughts of Christmas and the way that Jesus Christ came to wash us clean of sin.

The world is five sunrises away from Christmas morning, and the day when we will celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Thank God Almighty we aren’t still awaiting His birth, but celebrating that which has already come! As with the birthdays of my own children, we like to reminisce, and think about that day Jesus was born; it brings the same tears of joy to our eyes. Now He is with us always, every minute, day, and week... so join me in praising Him... listen to our week with Him...

Are we prepared for the imminent return of Jesus Christ? Are we ready to rise from our homes, never to return, or have we been lulled to sleep by the spiritual complacency of the world, perhaps blinded by agents of darkness within the Christian Church itself? Maybe we have become like those who ignore the small problems until they finally break and and can’t be fixed, or will cost more to replace than they can afford to pay. It is imperative that we keep our faith at the ready, and watch second by second for the clouds to part, and for our savior to descend. Are our hearts, minds, and souls prepared, and waiting for Him in great anticipation? Do we earnestly pray “Come quickly Lord Jesus”, and honestly mean what we say?

For some people the day after Christmas is like falling off of an emotional cliff; the exciting and often hectic days of preparation for Christmas are over, and the emotional and spiritual exhilaration of Christmas Day with all its gifts, family, food, and worship, return to routine daily living once again. Some of us are glad for the rest, peace, and quiet, but others fall into a deep depression. The good news is that Jesus is there for us regardless of how we react, and to help us through each and every day and emotion we feel.

Christmas Day is but two days away, and when it arrives we will celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, but as we lift Him up in joyous song we should never forget why He was sent to us. All stories have a beginning, and are meant to have an end, the redemption story of our savior Jesus is no different. So as we celebrate the child being born to a virgin, we need to keep in mind His ministry, the empty tomb, and the second coming that we are still longing for.
