Listening for the Voice of God

02/27/2018

Do you speak with God in prayer? Does His voice come to you and direct you, or do you approach Him with a list of wants and a proclamation then follow them quickly with “Amen” without listening? If God isn’t speaking to you then perhaps you need to first believe that He will, and that He desires to. Not believing that God wants to speak with you is an indication that you don’t really know Him.

“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭33:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God speaks to us in different ways; sometimes it can be a loud voice, like the one He used to speak to Moses (Exodus 3:14), at other times it is a small still voice like the one He used to speak to Elijah (1 Kings 19:11-13), or then again an inaudible voice to our hearts (Ezekiel 1:3), or perhaps by dreams at night (Job 33:15), or visions in the day (Genesis 15:1). Many times though it is by revelation of Himself through His Word through the Holy Spirit. However He chooses, regardless of the manner, He most certainly speaks. Are you listening? Andrew Murray wrote of this in this way:

“As we enter the place of secret prayer, let us be eager to hear Him speak as we are to say what is on our heart. The highest blessing of prayer will come as we cease to pray and let God speak.” - Andrew Murray

God is not merely a wisp of vapor, or a cloud floating high above, He is as real as the flames licking up out of a burning Bush, the sound of David’s lyre, the raindrops on Noah’s face, and the voice which spoke to Moses from atop the Mercy Seat.

“And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.”

‭‭Numbers‬ ‭7:89‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Moses had a conversation with God, and so did every prophet. We don’t just speak to God, but He speaks to us as well. What we have to say is important, but what He has to say to us is much more so. We have the question to God’s answer. We wish to take a journey, but only God knows our destination. None of this can happen unless we hear His voice.

“And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭30:21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

So are you listening? Are you ready to obey Him?

Prayer:

Father, I thank you for speaking with me, and building our relationship amidst the conversation. I thank you for guiding my steps, as you say turn left, or right. I wish to journey to your eternal kingdom Lord, but I can only get there if you lead me, and instruct me by calling out. Speak to me always Lord, and may my ears be tuned to your voice. Let me see your signs as the deaf see the words in the hands before them; let my ears see the world as a bat through the night, or the prophet’s heart hears the beat of yours. Holy Father still me in our secret place and speak to me your will. Tell me those things you would have me know Holy Father, and let your Holy Word be the lamp unto my feet... your voice, your presence within me. Merciful Father, you hear my cry, my words, and the utterances of my spirit, but give me pause Father, so that I can hear your reply, I can know your thoughts regarding my desires. Let your small voice, your thunderous clap, your soft sign, your sweet dream and ominous vision speak to me, and as you speak let my attention be focused upon you. I tremble at the sound of your voice, for the anticipation of it is great. Speak Father, to me your child, that I might obey.
