Is God’s Word at work in us? This is a question that challenges us because inevitably we ask ourselves, “what does that actually mean?” Does it mean that we ask, and the work is His to assign? Does it mean that His Word is an expression of His will, and that the work is our striving to complete it? Is His Word a promise to us, and the work how that promise comes alive? Or perhaps His Word is a lesson in life, and the work is how it is being taught to us. Each of these are examples of how God gives His Word and how it works within us. Do you believe His Word is His Bond? Or perhaps the first question we should ask ourselves is “do I believe that the Word and God are one and the same?”

There comes a point in our faith life when we have given ourselves over to God, and trust so completely in Jesus Christ, that the struggle for righteousness ends and our faith becomes as natural as taking our next breath. Is this what we seek today, or do we fight daily with our human nature in an attempt to walk a fine line between our earthly life and heaven... and not truly becoming a resident in either place.

I was reading about what is called commonplace religion, that is, religion which is shaped around what is easy, formed around what others say and not by fervent prayer, God's Word, His will, and our own self-denial. Today we live in a feel good society in which people say "if it feels good then it must be good and right." But that isn't what the bible teaches us. We were never meant to shape our own religion, or alter the Word of God, we were never meant to form a commonplace religion that serves our whims.

This morning our devotional message is one of great promise... God cares for us. He answers our prayers, shoulders our burdens, heals us, comforts us, provides for us, and is always true to His Word. We are living in a pessimistic time when men and women, even in the highest of offices, don’t seem to know the truth. Yet we are asked to put our trust in them saying things like “He/she is the lesser of two evils.” Isn’t it wonderful to be able to turn to God and Jesus Christ knowing that in them there is no compromise, and that their Word is always true?

Truth is always truth. I was reading a devotional message this morning on the subject of grace. The key verse it used was one that I thought I knew perfectly, and one that I had quoted many times, but as I read it anew this morning I suddenly realized that over the years I had stopped hearing it as a Word from God, and started saying it as though it was my statement of truth. I was claiming something for myself that belonged to God alone. I was boldly saying that God’s grace was sufficient for me, as if I controlled it, and I could make it so, when in fact this scripture is God telling us directly, and unequivocally, that it is so. Have you ever found yourself claiming that you own the truth in God’s Word? That by saying, or believing it, that you have somehow moved it from the realm of fiction, or literature, into one of fact and truth?
