Where do we seek shelter when the storms of life come? This morning the devotional message I read was titled "When Trouble Comes" and E.M. Bounds wrote that "the most natural thing to do is carry your troubles to the Lord and seek grace, patience, and submission there." We are indeed blessed to have such a place of shelter and safety in our times of distress. God is our strong tower and Jesus Christ our Lord is dependable and true as He tells us to pray in His Name, and intercedes for us.

My personal devotional reading this morning dealt with making all of the common things in our lives sacred. Pastor E.M. Bounds wrote that "It puts God not just in our praying and church-going, but in every aspect of life. The spirit of devotion makes the common things of earth sacred, and the little things great." Someone holding our hand as they pray for us, and telling us that we are going to be alright becomes priceless. A gentle touch conveys our love and caring even as the few words we speak in prayer comforts others. Touch; it seems such a small thing and yet is mentioned repeatedly in scripture. A common thing made holy by our devotion.

As we look about ourselves today, what are our distractions from faith, and what are those things that bless us as we seek out the Lord? When we begin our prayers this morning what will we thank God for, and what will we ask Him to help us overcome? Sometimes we find that it is the little things in our lives that bless us most... but it is also the little things that can trip us up in our faith.

Does God speak to you every day? If your answer is “no, not every day”, are you certain of that? It is my experience that God seldom shouts out loud at us; His voice is gentle and requires a certain stillness of spirit if we are to converse with Him. Make it a point to silence yourself and listen for what scripture calls his small still voice… if you quiet yourself in this way, and do not quench the spirit, then you will find that in the silence that surrounds you His whisper will become like a shout.

We call Jesus our Savior, but do we realize how much we actually need His salvation? It is so easy to look at thieves and murderers, and think of them as truly needing to be saved by the Cross. When we look at them we think that Jesus would needed to give His life for men and women such as these, but what about me? I am a moral person who might tell a tiny lie now and then, wouldn’t a simple prayer from Heaven have saved me? Well scripture tells us that all manner of sin separates us from God, so the answer is “No” we need His blood to cleanse our lie just as much as the thief, and murderer do their vile sins.
