Do we rest on the Sabbath? On the seventh day do we lay down our instruments of labor, close our businesses, and rest as our God rested, or do we look for excuses to disobey? On the Sabbath we aren’t meant to rest from life, but from our works. We don’t cease worship or abandon those things we have built or created, no, we simply do as God did… we rest following the completion of our labor. We don’t gather herds, build homes, or prepare the dead, but we still tend to them.

Today is Sunday, and to most of the Christian world it is considered the Sabbath, but to Jews, and some Christians, the Sabbath begins at sundown on Friday, and lasts until sundown on Saturday. Regardless of which way we honor it, this is a Holy day of rest, and sanctified as such by God. This is the only day of the week that God treats special, and that He has singled out in the commandments He gave Moses. So why then do so many of us routinely ignore this commandment, and how do we obey?

Each week we are meant to rest on the Sabbath as God did, but so many do not listen to this commandment, and do not rest. When our lives on earth are complete the people of God will rest once again on the great Sabbath, but many people will not have listened, and will not be there. We live a hard and difficult life on earth, and it wears us down. We need bodily rest each night, and a Sabbath each week to refresh us, body, mind, and soul, as it prepares us to continue doing God’s will. Then following our judgement, those who are found worthy will rest again, and enjoy a greater Sabbath at the table of God... do you honor the Sabbath today? Will you rest, and eat the Sabbath meal with God in heaven?
