How do we pray when we're broken? What do we pray for when we have nothing left, and our life is a shambles? How do we lift our spirits high enough that we can face God with our desires? We are often embarrassed when we have totally failed in life; we cover ourselves in leaves and hide as Adam and Eve did. Is that really what we should do? Is our faith that shallow? Do we believe that God has given us up to our despair?

It is the final day of the year and a good time to look back on all that God has done for us, and with us, during it. There will be memories of the wonderful moments, disappointments, celebrations, and mourning, but in all of these remembrances, and more, God is evident and has been helping us. This is a time to look at the victories we have experienced together, the rescues we have received, the healing of our hearts, and the comforting of our spirits. Then, let’s set up an Ebenezer stone (stone of help) in our lives as a way of remembering Him for all His help.

We might be a person who never wants help, or someone one who is reluctant to seek help; then again, maybe we are one of those who readily asks for help, or goes straightway for help at the slightest hint of trouble. As God’s children we all have different personalities, so He deals with each of us individually. God wants us to come to Him for help, He gave us Jesus and were are told that whatever we asked for in His name he would do for us, and the Lord also tells us to help one another. So whatever our personality, we are provided a readymade avenue of help that is comfortable for each of us… but the foundation of all these begins and ends in Him. How do we seek and give help in our lives today? In what way has God transformed, or influenced us in this regard?

There is no cry for help that we can utter which is more important than when we call out to God asking Him to help us believe. If we are seeking God, and Jesus Christ, but find ourselves unable to bridge that gap between us and Them… it is time to pray; not simply to know who God is, or to believe that Jesus actually walked this world, but to believe with all our heart, mind, souls, and strength that Yaweh is the one true God, and that Jesus, His Son, lived, suffered, died, and was resurrected, so that our sins would be forgiven, and we could have a loving, and righteous, relationship with Him. Jesus did this so that our life with God would be restored, and it would be peaceful, joyous, and eternal.

In this age of COVID-19, that appears to us to be a never ending string of variants and new sickness, are we despondent? In this world that is filled with hatred, and an all out attack on the Word of God, are we afraid? As men turn against one another, and people die of COVID, it is easy to fall victim to depression, but if we continue to call out to the Lord He will answer us… He will protect us, and He will set us free. When we feel boxed in by events, and accosted by discord from every angle, our God will open the doors of this earthly prison and lead us into green pastures. He will turn us out into wide open spaces of endless and eternal joy, not by removing us, by the death of our bodies, but through the unshackling of our souls from the spirit of this world.

As Christians we need to behave different from the worldly, and in times of joy, or trouble, we should always trust in the Lord our God, and rejoice in the company of fellow Saints who follow Jesus. Those in the world will turn to other men when they are in trouble, and look to their kings and governments to provide for them, and feed them, when they are hungry, but ungodly men who hold out one hand with food or help, will extend the other for payment, and those who celebrate in the world, do so with the unbelieving who drink to excess, revel in sexual sin, and sing songs espousing lies against God, Jesus, and Their commandments.

Are you troubled right now? Maybe you were unable to sleep last night because of worry? We all find ourselves experiencing hardship or uncertainty at some point in our lives, but as Christians we have a source of help that gives us amazing peace, and returns joy to our days. When Jesus abides in us He brings with Him the presence of our Heavenly Father, because God abides in Jesus, and Jesus in Him. In this way God is with us in our sorrows, troubles, mourning, and every aspect of our lives... and He is our help; our comfort and cheer.

Who do we call on in times of trouble? Where do we turn when all seems lost, and we are wandering blindly in our lives? We each have fallback plans that we engage when we can’t solve our own problems. We might not even realize we do this, but it is true. Some people call their friends for help, others go home, and some seek help from professionals such as doctors, psychologists, bankers, lawyers, or such, but all of us have some safety net we depend on... where does God fit into your list of those you turn to?
