Do we understand that Jesus Christ had to die in order to secure our redemption, or do we think He was just a mythical character meant to describe morality to us in a how-to book called the Bible? Friends, the account is real, and not a story; it is the single greatest event to occur since creation, and is complete with all the miracles, wonders, suffering, awe, and yes, death. The Bible is the one true account of faith, and the never ending story of God’s love and creation that continues today.

As men and women of God we do many things of faith while following Jesus with our crosses on our shoulders. We feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, comfort the dying, and so many other acts of mercy. We love God, love others, give hope to the hopeless, and open our hearts to those who walk through the world invisible to everyone around them, but as we are busily doing all of these things we should never neglect our own spiritual growth. Sometimes we are so busy doing the THINGS of faith that we forget to nurture, and grow our own faiths. In this way we live perpetually in a state of shallow spiritual immaturity.

There is an old saying that goes like this “Variety is the spice of life”, and we all adhere to it in one way or another. We don’t like to vacation in the same place all the time, we like to watch different shows on television, and we certainly like to eat a variety of foods. The same is true in our spiritual lives. Although we might have favorite verses of scripture that resonate with us, that we commit to memory, and which seem to apply especially well to our lives, all scripture is meant to be taught, learned, and made a part of who we are as men and women of faith.

Our God is dependable, He is faithful, and we know what His promises are, but these are the images we have of him from afar. We know that He will defend us, go to war for us, and win the day, but on the eve of every battle our God surprises us, and our enemy, with the new strategy He has prepared for the next day’s conflict. So why is it that we ourselves get so rooted in our faith, and never attempt to surprise our enemy, or thrill our friends, with how we implement our newness of faith, or the freshly forged sword of the Word He has given us?

We are not meant to turn God’s Word, and the gospel of Jesus Christ, into entertaining stories, fables, or otherwise enhanced fictional accounts in an attempt to make them entertaining for our children, or to capture the comfortable imagination of sinners who might then believe wrongly. What good does it do our children to learn a falsehood? Will a cleverly contrived and embellished account of God sending His Son to redeem us actually convey the new covenant in Christ, and save the lost? We are meant to deliver God’s Word and the gospel just as they are written… worshipping in spirit and truth.

Without the Word of God we are lost, and without His Son Jesus Christ we will remain so. God’s Holy Word teaches us of life, of Himself, and of His Son Jesus. It gives us His commandments, promises, and His assurance that we are not alone, but it also reveals our deep affliction in sin, and how precarious our life is relative to eternal death. Then, in our darkest hour, and deepest moment of hopelessness, comes Jesus, sent by God’s love, and prophesied of throughout God’s Word… our healer, savior, and redeemer who is the vessel of God’s amazing grace.

As we live out our lives we find that we struggle day and night to reach, and then to maintain ourselves, in purity, and righteousness. Thankfully, we continue to grow in our maturity, and find ourselves strengthened all the more in our faith, and the maintenance of it, but let there be no doubt that even the spiritually aged, with all their knowledge and wisdom, still wrestle with the world for control of their souls. So how is it that the babies, and the young people in faith can dare hope to keep their way pure if their elders are struggling?

Oh, I pray that we would all be seen as letters from Christ. I pray that our hearts would contain the Word of God, written there by His mighty finger as it moves within us. I pray that we each make our hearts and spirits to be living tablets, spiritual scrolls, and that we open them to Him. When we turn our gaze inward I pray that we find His Word there. When those around us watch us living out our lives it is my deepest desire that they see the image of Jesus Christ, and hear God’s Word, alive, and powerful, as if read aloud, and echoing from the mountains, and through the valleys of our lives and beings. Do others see our faith thriving within us as their example, and edification as they walk the pilgrim’s path towards their own righteousness, and as they seek holiness, and perfection within themselves? Are these prayers rising from your heart today?

Is the Word of God alive in us? Do we value it like fine gold, but seek to hold it close to us like a warm and breathing newborn infant? So often we look at the words on a page, or computer screen, and lose sight of their power, and the life in them. God’s Word is more that ink, or a Pixel on a screen... it breathes life into us, and as we study, and pray, it becomes the voice of God within us. When we incorporate it into our prayers it instills His will into our desires, and heals us with His touch... can we truly say that God’s Word is living in us?

Do you consume the Word of God as if it were your greatest joy? Does it satisfy you completely like a feast for your soul? When we are called by God, and declare His Son Jesus to be our savior, we find ourselves transformed, and that God’s Word has become the greatest delicacy at His table. We consume it with amazing zeal, and the mere scent of it causes us to long continuously for its taste. Does this describe our longing, or have we lost a taste for the Word after years of the same steady diet?

Do we keep the Word of the Lord fresh in our minds? Do we remember what He has commanded us to do so that we will not fall into sin? It is so easy to walk rather innocently into a sinful situation if we follow after our own whims, or lean on our own understanding. In order that we remain on the path of righteousness we must have A roadmap, or directions for our journey, and remember which way to turn when we encounter various crossroads. Do we diligently study the map of faith?
