We say that there is but one God, a God above all, and that there is no other, but do we live as though that is true? The Israelites said these same words and yet formed golden calves and worshiped false gods. Are we any different when we stand before gleaming gold medallions, polished marble statues, and treasures in our homes saying look what my labor and wealth has brought me? Do we marvel and say, “see what my hands have made!”? In such moments who do we worship, who is our god, and as we worship ourselves as the god of our success can we be saved from ourselves?

Do we continue to live for ourselves, and not for Jesus Christ who died for us? Do we not realize that by His death we too have died, and by his resurrection all believers have been raised from the dead in Him? It is in this way that we owe our lives as a debt to Jesus. We are following more than an idea that has been proposed to us, but a life that was given for us. Our belief in Christ is for more than our own salvation, and healing, but so that we can glorify God.

When we are in trouble do we call on God to save us out of desperation, or do we ask for His help so that through His provision, and salvation, we might glorify Him? God’s rescue is not done solely for our benefit, but also to reveal His majesty. When we give to those in need how does it make us feel? The goodness and warmth we experience is only a reflection of what God feels when He answers us in our times of need.
