As we pursue our faith we find that there are two basic types of people we can associate ourselves with; there are those who make us stronger in our belief, and those who dull our righteousness, or lead us into temptation… thus causing our faith to falter. So who do we surround ourselves with? Who do we call our friends, and are they like whet stones that sharpen us in righteousness, and faith to a fine edge, or hard rocks that we are swung against, and who dull us? Who is it that we call friend, and who calls us their friend?

What does our relationship with Jesus look like? Are we His followers, servants, subjects, students, disciples, siblings, companions, or perhaps His joint heirs? Well, depending on where we are in our journey of faith, or the section of the road we find ourselves walking with Him, we can be any, or all, of these things at one time or another. But, there is one part of our relationship that best shows the depth and breadth of our relationship, and that is the friendship we have with Him. Jesus looks upon us as friends, but do we consider ourselves worthy to be friends with Him?

Chuck Savage is a brother in Christ that I have loved dearly for many years, and he sent me a card yesterday. There was nothing unusual about that because he sends me one every single week like clockwork. You see he lives in a distant city, and yet our friendship survives the miles. Each week I receive a brief handwritten card from him in which he tells me a bit about his family, his life, and something he found uplifting about one of my devotional messages… which he reads religiously. He is without a doubt one of the finest, and most godly men I know, and he is my friend. Even though most would say that we are unlikely friends, and have very little in common, our friendship, and brotherly love for one another, survives.

As Christians there is a very critical question we should ask ourselves, and how we answer it can very well determine the future of our souls. We should ask: “How do I chose my friends?”. Of all those who surround us as we wander the earth, who are those that we find worthy to be called our friends? The Bible speaks a great deal about friends and friendship, and this is for good reason… whether in good or bad behavior, we begin to reflect them, and they to reflect us.

When we speak with Jesus Christ, and pray to our Heavenly Father in His name, do we keep in mind who Jesus truly is? As the years of our faith go by, and we come to know Him as friend through thousands upon thousands of prayers, it is easy to lose sight of the magnificence, and dominion of Christ; replacing His kingship with an air of proforma, and familiarity. This can lead us to approach Him as if we were His equal, and thus, we should be able to make demands of Him. When treating Him in this way we are attempting to increase who we are, and diminish who He is, but lest we forget our place in this relationship we need to remind ourselves often of the respect and glory He deserves from us, and all that He is, and has done for us.

Who, or what do we choose to love? Who do we seek out and call our friends? In what way do we come to love them? The answer to these questions tells us a great deal about who we are, and the direction we are inclined to go in our faith. It also tells God if He is the center of our life, or if we have placed something, or someone above Him. God created the garden, and put Adam in it, He meant it to please man and his wife, but never did He intend for it to be loved more than Himself, or for it to be chosen over Him.
