Do you see God the Father as a gentle old grey-haired man who forgives you regardless of what you do and without regard to, or memory of, who and what you are? Well, that isn’t so. Without the horrific and yet wonderful sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ we would be lost, because God’s very nature would prohibit Him from overlooking our sins. Our forgiveness is a supernatural spiritual event that is without precedent, and which cleanses the once permanent stain of sin.
We have been purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ and are privileged to know Him personally. We have been baptized in water, and then again in the Holy Spirit as they were poured over and into us, having been born on the wings of grace and carried within the sweet breath of Christ Himself. Yet despite this, we find that the allure and temptation of sin can be too great for us to resist. How can this possibly be? How can we at one moment be declared the temple of the Holy Spirit and in the next find ourselves in a pit of raging lions… which are our sins.
How loyal are we to our Lord Jesus Christ? Are we inclined to say "absolutely!” but then catch ourselves pausing the television on some terrible show filled with foul language as we are browsing through the channels. Are we really serving God faithfully when such things as this happen, or are we walking a fine line between righteousness and the basic human desires and instincts of the old fallen person we once were?
God is indescribably great, and we are so utterly lost without His love and grace, but Jesus has an overpowering presence as well, and although we describe Him as humble, and meek, He is also glorious. We realize our faults and shortcomings, and rarely do we compare ourselves with the magnificence of God's glory, or the perfection of Jesus. We don't like to compare ourselves to the perfection that is Jesus nor to the absolute and awesome presence and power of God the Father because that would be presumptuous of us and so farfetched; some would consider it heretical. John fell to the ground as if dead at just the sight of the transfigured Christ, and it was only by the hand of Jesus that he was awakened. When we meet Jesus and stand before God will we be overcome by the mere sight of Him?
Do you move along in your life of faith and feel like you are making great strides in sanctity only to have some trivial thing reawaken the old sinful person you used to be? Well, we all have this happen from time to time, and our lives of faith are a constant struggle against our natural selves... so why do we keep falling into this trap, and what can we do to overcome this disappointing behavior?
Have you ever wondered what happens when we break bread together? Is sharing a meal and the breaking of bread a spiritual occurrence or just the fulfillment of a biological need? This is our thought for this morning, and we should think on this every time we sit down to eat. Is communion the only time the Jesus joins you at the dinner table?
Today our devotional study has to do with compassion. I was reading E.M. Bounds' thoughts and had to read these words several times "It is no sin to feel the pain and realize the darkness on the path into which God leads us. It is only human to cry out against the pain and desolation of the hour." Compassion is a gift to those who pray; it helps us feel the pains and remorse of those who we pray for, and it makes us aware of the basic nature of human kind as we pray for the return of Christ. It is encouraging to know that Jesus is not without compassion. He felt all of the emotion that we feel and yet He was without sin.
In my devotional reading his morning Pastor E.M. Bounds wrote on the subject of forgiveness. The title of his devotional message was "The Abundant Pardon" and it spoke of how important it is to forgive. This made me contemplate the subject as well, and to fathom the depth of this seemingly simple act that can repeatedly trip us up as we travel the way of faith. Let’s look at it further and see how forgiveness can either bless us, or its lack can destroy our relationship with God…
The devotional message I read this morning spoke of faith and prayer. It reminded me of how often I have read or quoted Mark 12:23 and asked that God answer my own prayers. Our faith is prone to fading away without prayer, and our prayer life deteriorates without a healthy dose of faith. There is no substitute for either.

Are we afraid to speak directly to God? Do we feel safer going to a deacon, an elder, or our pastor when we have sin issues in our lives? If you look inward and find that this is true of yourself, don't fear, there is nothing new in this... it has been happening since the time of our first sin. Men have been afraid to approach God in sin from the moment that Adam and Eve first hid themselves in the Garden of Eden, continued on to the time of Moses, and occurs today as well.
