My personal devotional reading this morning was centered on prayer and the church, and was written by Pastor E.M. Bounds. He wrote "just as prayer generates a love for scriptures and causes people to begin to read the Bible, so does prayer also cause men and women to visit the house of God to hear scriptures explained." So often we think that believers are drawn to praying after having attended church, but that isn’t necessarily true. We are drawn to God, and prayer, in many ways by the Lord Himself, and our hearts are softened to Him as we come to know Him through His Son Jesus Christ… after having heard the gospel of Jesus by any number of ways.

As we read the book of Jude we are reminded of what will occur within the world, and the Church, in the final days. We are told about fallen angels, and the presence of false teachers. Further, we are reminded of what awaits them when our Lord Jesus Christ returns to judge. But in Jude there is hope, and encouragement for all those who come to, or continue to follow, our Lord Jesus. Today we see the scoffers in the world, and we feel the heat of an approaching fire… but we are also assured of the glorious eternity that awaits those who remain firm in their faith, and glorify God, and our Lord Jesus.

Today we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. We remember the story of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem, and seeking a room where there was none available. We recall how Jesus was born there, wrapped in swaddling cloth like a newborn lamb being prepared for sacrifice, and placed in a manger. Then we go to the pasture and listen with the shepherds as they are told of this miracle child, but how do we pray today? Do we pray in His name for the simple things we desire, or like Mary whose soul was known to pray fervently in the Holy Spirit as she anticipated His coming?
