On this day, Christmas Eve, we are in great expectation of a tiny baby’s arrival into the lineage of David... He is the Christ Child, Jesus, Emanuel, the Son of God. He will be born in Bethlehem, and a star will shine bright inside each of us to show the way to where He was held to His mother’s breast and has now come to abide in us. Are we ready to make the journey to where He is and to meet Him where He was born into the world; into each of us? In the anticipation of His coming can we hear Him calling us to where Angels were once preparing themselves to announce Him?

Today I invite you to join me as I ask myself if I have truly abandoned my entire self to God and Jesus Christ. Are they the focus and source of my life's energies, or do I simply vocalize their names so that I can feel good as I seek to understand what believing really is, and try to appear righteous before others until I can do so? Am I doing in my faith what Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sang about in their secular song titled “Fakin It” in 1968? Am I faking it until I can make it? Or am I following God and Jesus with a heart that belongs truly and completely to Them?

As we go about our lives we run into various people we don’t know, they are strangers if you will. Some of these are needy, some are unruly, others are irritating and obnoxious, but most are just everyday souls we pass along the way as we live out our Christian lives. The question I would like us to consider today is inspired by a Bible verse from Hebrews 13, and the question is this: have we ever crossed paths with an angel, and if so did we realize it when we did, and what were the circumstances? Was the experience we had challenging, spiritually rewarding, or, simply nondescript until after it was over?

Oh that our eyes would be opened to what God has surrounded us with. We walk through our days and think that we are alone, or listen to the silence on a quiet walk when we are sad or contemplating some problem, when all about us there are amazing spiritual things occurring. We should pray each day that our eyes be opened to the wonders that swirl about us. Then perhaps in those moments when we are longing to speak with Jesus, or calling for the Holy Spirit to come, we will realize that all we must do is speak, and that the Holy Spirit is all about us.
