When we awaken each morning and we enter consciously into the presence of God do we do so humbly, or thinking that we deserve to be there with Him? When we come to his table in our morning prayer where do we take a seat; do we sit immediately at the right hand of His chair, or in a lesser seat? Our view of our faith is not nearly as important as His perception of it, so where we sit relative to Him is vitally important.
There is something very special about having a meal with someone. When we sit down together and eat it joins us in a very basic way, and this understanding doesn’t escape us... we have business dinners, festival dinners, banquets to honor each other, and so many other celebratory meals that bring us together, but beyond that... we dine at the Lord’s table. When was the last time you dined with Jesus?
What is it that keeps most people from knowing Christ, or from sitting at God’s Table? It is the lack of having experienced the amazing grace that abounds there. In knowing only this world the unbeliever is reluctant to step across the threshold of faith into a place previously unknown... even if it might promise untold wealth, happiness, and experiencing the delights at God’s feast. Yet with one real taste of the love, mercy, and grace, of God through Jesus we are changed forever.
Are you living an exemplary life of faith, and do you take pride in this? Do you look down on those who are less perfect, and lord over them in piety? Let me ask you one question... at what point has Jesus made you feel like less? As He walks with you, a sinner, He doesn’t talk down to you, or gloat about His perfection, He speaks to you with His arm around your shoulder, or while sitting at your table; so who are we to elevate ourselves?
What nourishes your faith? What does you Spirit consume for strength? When we go to the Lord’s table we are feeding our souls His flesh and blood, and this sustenance bring us life, eternal life. To consume the body of Christ is to bring Him inside us... to allow Him to dwell within us. Communion, it is the life giving force of the Christian experience.
Listen... do you hear Jesus’ voice? Are you hearing Him calling you to “come”, or is He calling “come back!”? When Jesus first calls us He gives us incredible peace, rest, and lives, but over time those things might subside; why is that? Why have we lost the intensity of joy and faith that our initial answer to His call brings?
