All in Daily Devotional
Scripture says we should be further transformed in our thinking each day through studying the Word and redirecting our thoughts towards godly pursuits. As we draw closer to Jesus and The Father, we will be able to discern God's will and display to the world the image of Jesus. Our prayers will likewise be transformed, and the less mature or selfish prayers we once prayed will be transformed into prayers of intercession, or to those of deeper spiritual construction.
Today as I read my morning devotional, E.M. Bounds went on to speak deeper about the peace of God and the effect prayer has on worry and stress. So I am contemplating two of his thoughts as I read Philippians 4 once again.
Do you have someone that you read the bible with each day? Do you have someone who you pray with every day? Is there a daily devotional that you read and share with a special friend who reads it too? Is there a Christian brother or sister with whom you can share the things that bring you joy or those you lament in your life? Do you talk, write, text, email, or send a letter to someone regarding matters of faith and Christian friendship? If the answer is no then you are missing one of Christianity's greatest joys.
While reading my daily devotional this morning I paused on a passage of scripture taken from Psalms 91 in which God speaks! Here is what I read, and I have included the prior and trailing verses to add context:
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”
Psalms 91:14-16 KJV
I awoke on this New Year's Day to what felt like a fresh new beginning, but as I prepared to read my morning devotional and reach out to God in Prayer I had a revelation... Today is not unlike any other day in Christ. I was thrilled and blessed by this realization and His presence. God is indeed with us in His fullness, and remains the same each moment of every day. Whether this day is our first, or our last, He is without change.
Today is the last day of the year, and typically one in which we take stock of our accomplishments and failures over the past twelve months. This is also a time when we make plans for the coming year, and determine the condition of our present life. As we do so, do we have regrets that haunt us, and fears that give us tribulation as we look towards the coming New Year? Well, fear not, because our Lord uses what is past to prepare us for what lies ahead, and He helps us face today with a firm belief in His goodness and mercy.
When we come to know Jesus Christ, and accept Him as our Lord and Savior, something amazing begins to happen in and to us. We are most certainly relieved of the sin which began in Adam, but the knowledge of good and evil remains... so what is God to do with that?
Has God called you to serve Him in a way that requires you to sacrifice something you own, or of yourself? Are you at a place in your faith that requires you to make a choice between believing and having faith in Him, or returning to where you once were in faithlessness? Well every believer comes to this fork in the road, and it separates the believers who go to the right, from the nonbelievers who turn back to the left.
Are we like children before God, or are we walking in our own independent self-righteousness? Do we say “I believe” and yet act like we are in control of our lives? Maybe we trusted God at one time, but have since taken those reins back from Him, and slowly, over time, found ourselves walking apart from Him. Do we know where we are spiritually? Are we uncertain how, and if, we can ever go home again? Well we can.
Do you deny the sin within you? Do you say to others that you are a moral man, a good man, and that you harm no one? Do you argue that your morality makes you righteous? My response to you is that you have no idea what sin truly is... or else you are deceiving yourself. Let’s look into this further.
Are we worthy of forgiveness? Are we worthy of the sacrifice that God made by giving His only Son to die for our sins? Are we worthy of an audience with the creator of the universe? Are we worthy of forgiveness? There are so many questions like this that most of us would answer with a resounding “NO!”, but is that really true?
This morning we celebrate the moment in time when God became man. On this day, those many years ago, Jesus Christ was born to a virgin in Bethlehem. I would say that this was the beginning of God’s plan to redeem mankind, but that plan was actually conceived long before the foundation of the world, even before Adam and Eve had gained the knowledge of good, evil, and knew of sin. His plan continues unfolding to this very day as we anticipate the second coming of Jesus.
On this day, Christmas Eve, we are in great expectation of a tiny baby’s arrival into the lineage of David... the Christ Child, Jesus, Emanuel, the Son of God. He will be born in Bethlehem, and a star will shine bright inside each of us to show the way to where He will be held to His mother’s breast. Are we ready to make the journey to where He will be born into the world; into each of us? Is the anticipation of His coming calling us even now to where Angels will announce Him?
Have certain things of the world died to you? Are you a different person today than you were the day before you first believed? Do you ask the Lord to forgive you for your sins and then take a deep breath of relief when they are lifted from you, or do you ask, but then refuse to allow His total forgiveness to occur in you? Let’s look at this ploy of Satan... our continued spiritual regret and conviction after being forgiven.
Do you know Jesus? Have you developed a relationship with God? Are you confident in your faith and feel like you have a handle on it? If you answered yes to the first two questions, that is exciting and wonderful. If you answered yes to the third then you are in for some big surprises as you read on.
