Do we believe that our relationship with God is all we have of value in our lives? Have we given ourselves up completely to Him, or do we feel that we are glorious, and a bargain for God at any price? When we have the least thought that we might be of some intrinsic value or service to Him we have fallen from His hand. Only when we realize that we are nothing without Him are we of any true value to our Lord and Father.
Has God called you to Himself, or is He calling you right now? By virtue of the fact that you have decided to read this devotional lesson I would say He has. Maybe you thought you were choosing Him, but the fact is, He has chosen you. Does this thought surprise you, or even frighten you? Are you uneasy with the thought that God has pursued and chosen you to do His will? Do you feel ready, or worthy?
Are you experiencing hardship in your life right now? Is there a problem at work, a health issue, the loss of a loved one? There are so many troubles that plague us in life, and being a Christian doesn't exempt us from them... but it does help us through them. Our God is not bound to this world, and Jesus, our savior, tells us that He too has overcome it. Answered prayer, like the way we worship, comes in spirit and truth. Are you looking far enough into your faith to find it?
Does Jesus preach in your city? God often tells us to do a certain thing; to reach out to someone, or to establish a church in some place, but once we experience the power of that happening, we are inclined to remain there in that moment or place. How often do we get in God's way once our portion of the job is done? How often does Jesus come to take the pulpit only to find us already there, and unwilling to step aside?
Are we steadfast in our faith? Are we allowing God to work in us so that we might be perfected and brought to completion? These are my thoughts for this morning and I invite you to join me in them.
Are you holding back from opening up to God until you have perfected yourself? Are you waiting for the time when you have become perfectly pure in thought before you seek to have a relationship with Jesus? If so you will never know them. They understand what and who you are, and yet they love you despite of it, let God begin the process of reshaping you.
Are there clouds in your life, and if so what do they look like? Are they the big billowy white ones of a bright summer day? How about the thin wispy ones that stretch out as if forever? Or, are they the dark churning clouds that tower into the sky filled with lightning and ominous rolls of thunder? God is in the clouds... how does He appear to you today?
Our goal should be to live in our faith for this particular moment. Looking into the future distracts us from the here and now, and what God has for us to do right this minute. Do we have long term spiritual plans that take up most of our time and prayer? Well, let’s drop our sail and look at what God has surrounded us with at this particular point in time!
There is a standing argument in the church regarding whether it is better to serve God intellectually or from the heart. We have heard the arguments from each side, but in truth it matters little which we choose... what matters most is that we hear God's Word and obey.
Are we slaves to instinctive worldly reflexes... this is a recipe for instant sin, and an avenue for our inner person, the fallen man, to bypass our faith and intellect as his voice erupts from our mouths. Conquering this ancient sinful creature within each of us requires that we secure him in heavenly handcuffs and chains that only the Holy Spirit can bind him with.
Am I blessed as Jesus said I would be when He taught the Beatitudes? Do I see them as simple precepts for life, or does their spiritual undercurrent shake me? These very easily followed rules for living can improve the life of an unbeliever, or elevate a person of faith to a dramatically higher spiritual plane.
This morning I am reading Psalm 84. This is a love poem/song, and the language is incredible. There is no doubt of the psalmist' love for God as he begins by writing of his longing to be in the presence of God. Do we follow Jesus simply so that we will receive the reward of eternal life? Do we serve Him for some blessing He might bestow on us? Do we fear God because we will be judged unworthy and thrown in a pit of fire? If our answer to any of these questions is yes, then our faith is an illusion, and God’s love for us is truly undeserved.
Where do we look for wisdom? How about righteousness, sanctification, and redemption? Do we find them in church or bible study? Do we seek them out while plodding along a pilgrimage path in some far off country? The answer is that we find them in one place only... Jesus Christ, and He can be found in all of these places.
Are we prepared to walk in the desert? Can we tolerate the feeling of loneliness that will test us there? When there is nothing left in our lives except our thoughts and God, will we find that to be sufficient, and that we are prepared to join Him in this solitary life? Will we accept sanctification in Christ just as His apostles did? These are questions to consider regarding our being alone with God, and the sanctity that results from it.
Have we placed Jesus first and foremost as our teacher? What is the danger in this? Why is it more important that we put Jesus the redeemer before Jesus the teacher?
